Our explorations

Haematoxylin (Natural Black 1, or C.I. 75290) :

Haematoxylin or Hematoxylin is extracted from the heartwood of the Logwood tree (Haematoxylum campechianum). Hematoxylin is the leuco form of the mordant dye haematein, the oxydized form of Haematoxylin. Haematein forms coloured compounds with several metals including aluminium, iron. Metal-Haematein complexes are among the most commonly used stains in histology to stain cell nuclei prior to examination under a microscope. SCRD is the only producer in the world to cover the whole range of purities, from the technical grade to the highest purity.

Morin (C.I. 75660) :

Morin is one of the many compounds which are extracted from the heartwood of the Old Fustic tree (Chlorophora tinctoria) also known as Dyer’s mulberry, Maclura tinctoria or Morus tinctoria. Morin (2′,3,4′,5,7-Pentahydroxyflavone) belongs to the flavonoid groups and more precisely to the flavonol subclass. Morin can be used to test the presence of Aluminium, since it forms characteristically fluorescent coordination complexes with it.

Maclurin (C.I. 75240) :

Maclurin is a compound extracted from the heartwood of the Old Fustic tree (Chlorophora tinctoria). Maclurin (2,4,6,3',4'-pentahydroxy benzophenone) is a starting product for the semisynthesis of azo dyes including Acid brown 188, Acid brown 189, Acid brown 314…

Oxydized Logwood extract

Botanical name : Haematoxylum Campechianum

The Logwood tree is small (10 to 15 meters). It has a twisted trunk and a brown-grey bark. The branches are thorny and have very small leaves. The flowers bearing 5 petals, appear in yellow clusters. The wood is very dense and doesn’t float.
Logwood has been used as a dye for centuries..
SCRD has its own Logwood plantation in Southern Nicaragua, since 2005.

Hématéine molecular structure

Applications :
Logwood has been used for centuries as a natural source of dye, and still remains the best source of Haematoxylin, which is used in histology for staining. In its time, logwood was considered a versatile dye, and was widely used on textiles but also for paper and leather.
Pure Logwood extract dyes water in pink-purple. The dye's colour depends on the mordant used as well as the pH. It is reddish in an acid environment but bluish in an alkaline one.

BOTANICAL FAMILY :  Haematoxylum brasiletto

OTHER COMMONS NAMES : Red Wood, Brazilwood.

CAUTION :  Haematoxylum brasiletto must not be mistaken with Caesalpinia Echinata, also known as Brazilwood : Echinata is an endangered species, which is not at all the case of Brasiletto.

Brasiletto is a small tree (from 2 to 12 meters high) which grows abundantly throughout Central America. It has a twisty trunk and a brown-greyish bark. The branches are thorny and the leaves small. It can be easily confused with Logwood. Flowers are yellow. This dye has been used for centuries.

Through its high Brazilin content, the extract gives a pink to red colour in water and a variety of shades, according to the mordant used. The oxydized form of Brazilin is Brazilein.

Pure Yellow Fustic extract

BOTANICAL NAME : Morus Tinctoria or Maclura Tinctoria

COMMON NAMES : Yellow Fustic, Old Fustic, Dyer’s Mulberry.

This tree originates in Central America. It is common from Mexico to Argentina.

Yellow Fustic is a big tree with a cylindrical trunk and grey-yellowish bark. The branches are thorny, the leaves fall during the dry season and the small flowers are beige.

OUR PRODUCT : 100 % pure Yellow Fustic extract. The powder colour ranges from deep yellow to brown and has no characteristic smell. The extract is soluble in water and ethanol. With its rich content of Morin and Maclurin, it gives a wide variety of colours, following the ions used.

 Molecular structure of Maclurine

This dye has been used for centuries, thanks to the great number of shades it gives with various mordants. According to Wikipedia, the main applications of Yellow Fustic, are :

    • With bichromate of potash: old gold
    • With Logwood and bichromate of potash: greenish yellows
    • With Copper sulfate : olive greens
    • With ferrous sulfate : dark greens
