Logwood

Since 2005, SCRD owns its own plantation in Southern Nicaragua. Logwood tree is small : 10 to 15 meters. It has a twisted trunk and a brown-grey bark. The branches are thorny and have very small leaves. The flowers bearing 5 petals, appear in yellow clusters. The wood is very dense and doesn’t float. The extract dyes water in pink to purple.
Logwood has been used for centuries as a natural dye. It is the best source of Hematoxylin, a stain used in biology.
